Intent
Our curriculum is designed to build upon prior learning, improve communication skills, promote creativity, broaden knowledge and prepare pupils for life beyond school.
We value pupils as individuals and aim to recognise their achievements in a wide range of areas. Our curriculum therefore ensures balance between academic and personal development. It gives equal importance to core and foundation subjects.
The national curriculum for art aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art techniques
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art
- Know about great artists, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
The teaching and implementation of the Art Curriculum at Wetheringsett Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and supported by the Suffolk Art Scheme plans, ensuring a well-structured approach to this creative subject.
Our art and design curriculum (based on the best practice model of the Suffolk Scheme of Art) progressively builds children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of different artists and media. Through the core concepts children:
- Are taught about a diverse range of artists/art styles from different time periods and cultures
- Develop their key vocabulary
- Experiment with varying styles and media using a sketch book
- Are taught a range of mediums inc. drawing, painting, collage, 3d sculpture, textiles and printing
- Experience collaborative working, in school and outside of the school, inc. participation in Cathedral art projects and community initiatives
Impact
We aim for our pupils to be familiar with the names, work and accomplishments of an increasing range of artists and designers who contribute to our culture both nationally and internationally. These artists should inspire children to develop their own creative ideas and ability to express them through the development of improving skills and techniques, towards achieving ever more accomplished pieces of drawing, painting, sculpture, model making and textiles. By the end of their time at primary school, our pupils will have had experiences of using different mediums with increasing skill, have developed evaluative skills and language to appraise their own work and that of others.
