Modern Foreign Languages
Modern Foreign Languages and Cultural Learning is a key learning area for our school. Our goal for Modern Foreign Languages is that children develop curiosity about other countries and the confidence to communicate in another language. We have a commitment to seek opportunities for our pupils to develop their language skills and develop a wider, and deeper, understanding of a range of cultures from around the world. We believe early learning through songs and games helps to build confidence and supports children to begin to develop an ear for languages. The children follow a four year cycle that is repeated throughout their time at Wetheringsett. In EYFS and KS1, we teach the children through simple songs and games. In KS2, we consolidate and build on this learning to ensure our children are confident and gaining fluency. As with all other subjects, during French we focus on our Big Ideas - which for MFL are;
- 'Curiosity' - What can we discover about the world, other cultures and languages?
- 'Understanding' - What do we understand? What can we deduce?
- 'Fluency' - What can we communicate? How can we respond to others?
